January 25, 2013

PAT EVANS AND BOBBY MCGEE NAMED RECIPIENTS OF
2012 CHARLES RINGLER FOUNDER’s AWARD

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Davey O’Brien Foundation today announced Pat Evans and Bobby McGee, two of the Foundation’s past presidents, as co-recipients of the 2012 Charles Ringler Founder’s Award.

The award, established in 2004, honors an individual or corporation devoted to the Foundation that has exhibited the same passion, pride and perseverance as Charles Ringler himself. Ringler, a longtime friend of Davey O’Brien, established the Foundation and O’Brien Memorial Trophy with other members of The Fort Worth Club in 1977. Because of Ringler’s leadership and steadfast commitment, the regional O’Brien Memorial Trophy Award developed into the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and over the past 35 years has gained national recognition and prestige.

“We are honored to recognize both Pat and Bobby for their continued dedication to the Foundation and our mission,” said Scott Murray, chair of the Founder’s Award Committee. “Their ongoing support and leadership have been vital to the advancement of the Foundation.”

Pat Evans has been a strong advocate of the Foundation and a member of the Board of Trustees for almost 20 years. Evans served as president of the Foundation from 2000-2005. Throughout that time, he instituted a number of changes, which helped the Foundation expand into what it has become today. One of the chief additions launched during Evans’ presidency was the Legends Award. Established in 2001 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Davey O’Brien Foundation, the Legends Award recognizes a college or professional quarterback who has made a significant contribution to the game of football, distinguished himself as an extraordinary leader and demonstrated exemplary conduct on and off the football field.

“During my presidency, I really wanted to focus on the legacy of the Foundation,” said Evans. “In addition to the creation of the Legends Award, I am very proud of both the lay and staff leadership that I helped install during my term. Charlie was a legendary and outstanding leader and I am thrilled to be receiving this honor.”

In addition to serving on the Foundation’s Executive Committee and Nominating Committee, Evans sits on numerous area civic boards including Harris Methodist Health System, Harris Methodist Southwest Hospital and First Methodist Church Foundation. He is an active member and past president of the Rotary Club of Fort Worth and a member of the advisory board of Texas Wesleyan University’s School of Business. Evans, the current president of Schieffer Group Management Company, was recently named chairman of the board of CAMICO, the nation’s largest CPA-directed provider of specialty liability insurance for Certified Public Accountants.

Evans’ successor, Bobby McGee, has also been a faithful supporter of the Davey O’Brien Foundation for many years. McGee, who joined the Board in 1991, has devoted his time, money and expertise to the Foundation’s endeavors. After accepting the presidency in 2005, McGee used his marketing experience and business acumen to transform the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. During McGee’s tenure, he helped increase brand awareness and fan participation by overseeing the creation of the Fan Vote and On-the-Road Campaign as well as the establishment of the Foundation’s online and social media presence.

“I am very humbled to be recognized as one of this year’s Charles Ringler Founder’s Award recipients,” said McGee. “The legacy that Charles established and that this award represents is something I am truly honored to be associated with.”

McGee, who stepped down from the presidency in 2010, is still an active member of the Foundation and sits on the Executive Committee and Nominating Committee. He is the founding Managing Partner of U.S. Growth Funds (USGF) and has served as CEO and Chairman of the investment committee since its inception. He is also currently the chairman of Jardine Foods, Inc. The University of Texas graduate is very involved in the Fort Worth community and has sat on the Board of Visitors at the McDonald Observatory, the Tarrant Country College Board of Trustees, and Jefferson Capital (SBIC) Advisory Board.

The Charles Ringer Founder’s Award will be presented at the 36th Annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner on Feb. 18, 2013 in Fort Worth, Texas. Other award recipients honored that evening will include: Johnny Manziel, 2012 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Winner; Eddie LeBaron, 2012 Legends Award Recipient; and Elizabeth Crowling, 2012 High School Scholarship Award Recipient.

Previous recipients of the Charles Ringler Founder’s Award include: Keith Jackson, 2009; Robert Lansford and JPMorgan Chase, 2008; the William E. Scott Foundation, 2007; American Airlines, 2006; The Fort Worth Club, 2006; Lamar Hunt, 2005; Don Looney, 2005; and Dan Poland, 2004.

EDDIE LEBARON TO RECEIVE DAVEY O’BRIEN
LEGENDS AWARD PRESENTED BY LOW T CENTER

December 12, 2012

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Davey O’Brien Foundation today announced Eddie LeBaron as the recipient of the 2012 Davey O’Brien Legends Award presented by Low T Center, in honor of his outstanding contributions to the game of football both on and off the field. LeBaron will be presented with the award at the 36th Annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner on Feb. 18, 2013 in Fort Worth, Texas.

“I am profoundly honored to receive the Legends Award,” said LeBaron. “It is truly flattering to join such an impressive group of men.”

Past recipients include Jim Kelly (2011), Bob Griese (2010), Dan Fouts (2009), Joe Theismann (2008), Steve Spurrier (2007), Paul Hornung (2006), Len Dawson (2005), Archie Manning (2004), Terry Bradshaw (2003), Bart Starr (2002) and Roger Staubach (2001).

“We’re thrilled to present Eddie LeBaron with our Legends Award,” said Scott Murray, Chair of the Legends Committee for the Davey O’Brien Foundation. “His outstanding contributions, both on and off the field, make him the ideal recipient of this year’s award, and we are greatly looking forward to celebrating his achievements at the Awards Dinner.”

LeBaron, a California native, began playing football at a very young age. By the time he was 13, LeBaron had developed into a multisport athlete: playing football, basketball and running hurdles for the track team. After graduating high school, LeBaron enrolled at the College of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. at the age of 16.

Affectionately nicknamed “Lil’ General” for his 5’7”, 165 pound-frame, LeBaron appeared very unassuming; however, the college football sensation lettered all four years at Pacific playing on both sides of the ball starting at quarterback and safety as well as punter. In 1949, LeBaron led his team to an undefeated season and earned All-American honors. As a tiger, LeBaron completed 197 passes for 3,838 yards and 45 touchdowns. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

The Washington Redskins selected LeBaron in the 10th round of the 1950 NFL Draft. However, the Lil’ General had to defer his NFL career; the Korean War had begun and LeBaron accepted a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He spent nine months in Korea where he was twice wounded. LeBaron received a Purple Heart and was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroism. He transferred to the inactive reserve in 1952 to begin his NFL career with the Washington Redskins.

After flourishing in his first season, throwing for 1,420 yards and 14 touchdowns, he was named NFL Rookie of the Year. LeBaron played seven seasons with the Washington Redskins (1952-53, 55-59) before becoming the Dallas Cowboys’ first quarterback. Although the Cowboys went winless in their inaugural season in 1960, LeBaron led the Cowboys to their first ever victory in their season opener in 1961 over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The four-time Pro Bowler hung up his cleats in 1963 after passing for 13,399 yards and 104 touchdowns.

Following his retirement from football, LeBaron went on to practice law with a degree he had earned during the offseason. He later served as the Atlanta Falcons’ general manager (1977-1982) and executive vice president/chief operating officer (1982-1985). After a brief stint with the NFL’s league office, LeBaron returned to California and joined the law firm of Pillsbury, Madison, and Sutro where he served as managing partner of the firm’s Sacramento office until retiring in 1997.

LeBaron and his wife, Doralee, currently live in Sacramento, Calif. They have three sons, Edward Wayne III, Richard and William as well as five grandchildren.

FORT WORTH, Texas – The 2012 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award® Marquee Match-up for week 12 highlights Davey O’Brien Semifinalists Collin Klein and Nick Florence as Kansas State looks to keep their perfect season alive on the road against Baylor.

Marquee Match-up: No. 2* Kansas State at Baylor
Saturday, November 17 at 7 p.m. (CT) on ESPN

Senior signal caller Collin Klein has led the Wildcats to a stellar season so far including a perfect 10-0 record and their first No. 1 BCS ranking in school history. Moreover, Klein himself has put together a great season. The Colorado native leads the Big 12 in passing efficiency (167.44 rating), passing yards per attempt (9.7 yards) and rushing touchdowns with 19. However, with two games left and a possible BCS National Championship berth on the horizon, Kansas State will need to play perfect to remain on top.

After a close game on the road against Oklahoma last week, Nick Florence and the Baylor Bears look to upset conference foe Kansas State at home. Despite a losing record on the season, the Bears’ offense is clicking on all cylinders. Florence leads the nation in total offense with 394.78 yards per game and the Bears rank second overall with 564 yards of total offense per game. They are also averaging 42.67 points per game compared to the Wildcats’ 42.20 points per game.
