2009 O’Brien Quarterback Award Finalists Announced Comments Off

Finalists continue their campaign for the oldest and most prestigious award honoring the nation’s best college quarterback

FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 23, 2009) – The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award® (The O’Brien) announced today its 2009 Finalists. The three quarterbacks: Case Keenum, University of Houston, Colt McCoy, University of Texas and Tim Tebow, University of Florida, were selected from the list of Semifinalists, narrowed down from all 120 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) quarterbacks.

Fans may continue to show their support and help determine which quarterback will win the coveted O’Brien Award by voting as often as once daily at www.VoteOBrien.org. Fan voting will close at noon (CST) on Dec. 6. The 2009 O’Brien Winner will be announced live on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show airing Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. (CST) on ESPN and will be honored at the 33rd Annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner held at The Fort Worth Club on Feb. 15, 2010 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Case Keenum, Houston
Keenum, the junior quarterback from Abilene, Texas, led the No. 23 Houston Cougars past Memphis last Saturday in the Cougars’ hunt for the Conference USA West division title. Keenum completed 29 of 39 attempts for 405 yards and five touchdown passes, setting new school records for career completions (971) and touchdown passes (94). Keenum leads the nation in passing with 4,599 yards and has thrown for 36 touchdowns this season. He now shifts his attention to their match-up against Rice this weekend in hopes of leading his team to the Conference USA Championship. Keenum has returned the spotlight to Cougar football and given Houston its second O’Brien hopeful since Andre Ware won The O’Brien in 1989.

Colt McCoy, Texas
McCoy, a four-year starter from Tuscola, Texas, directed the undefeated No. 3 Texas Longhorns to a victory over Kansas last Saturday clinching the Big 12 South division title and breaking the NCAA record for career wins by a starting quarterback. The senior quarterback leads the Big 12 in passing efficiency with a rating of 152.5 and has passed for 3,024 yards and 23 touchdowns this season. Before McCoy can turn his sights to the Big 12 Conference Championship, where he will take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers, he must first focus on Thanksgiving Day’s game against rival Texas A&M.

Tim Tebow, Florida
Under the leadership of Tebow, the No. 1 Florida Gators clinched the Southeastern Conference (SEC) East division title and their first undefeated season of SEC play since 1996. This season the senior quarterback from Jacksonville, Fla. broke SEC records for rushing touchdowns and touchdowns-scored. Tebow has thrown for 1,945 yards, 14 touchdowns and gained 706 yards on the ground with 11 rushing touchdowns to date this season. The Gators will clash with rival Florida State before shifting their focus to the SEC Championship where they will square off against Alabama in their quest for their second consecutive national title.

“The caliber of talent these three young men bring to the sport is undeniable and we are honored to recognize them as the 2009 O’Brien Finalists,” said Danielle Moorman, executive director of the Davey O’Brien Foundation. “This year’s fan support has far surpassed our expectations. No. 3 Texas hosts Kansas in a Big 12 match-up as two O’Brien Semifinalists go head-to-head

FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 18, 2009) – The 2009 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award® (The O’Brien) Semifinalist Match-up for week 12 highlights two returning O’Brien Semifinalists, Colt McCoy and Todd Reesing, as they go head-to-head in a Big 12 showdown. Fans can show their support for any of the 15 Semifinalists, by visiting www.VoteOBrien.org and voting as often as once daily. The Fan Vote will count as 5% of the total vote in determining the Finalists.

Semifinalist Marquee Match-up:

Kansas (Todd Reesing) at No. 3 Texas (Colt McCoy)
Saturday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. (CST) on ABC
In the final week before the 2009 O’Brien Finalists are announced on Nov. 23, Todd Reesing and the Kansas Jayhawks (5-5, 1-5) will travel to Austin to square off against the No. 3 Texas Longhorns led by Colt McCoy. In last Saturday’s 31-17 loss to Big 12 North rival Nebraska, Reesing threw for 236 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 42 yards and another score. This season the senior quarterback has passed for 2,862 total yards and 18 touchdowns on 251 completions. Reesing has also rushed for five touchdowns. 

McCoy directed the Longhorns (10-0, 6-0) to a 47-14 win against Baylor last Saturday, tying the NCAA record for most career wins by a starting quarterback. In just over three quarters, the senior signal caller completed 23 of 34 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns. McCoy, a 2008 O’Brien Finalist, hopes to lead the undefeated Longhorns to the Big 12 Championship for the first time since 2005.

  • Jacory Harris: No. 20 Miami (FL) vs. Duke  
    Saturday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. (CST) on ESPNU
    Harris and the Hurricanes return to Miami to take on the Blue Devils after a 33-24 loss at North Carolina where the sophomore quarterback completed a career high 28 passes for 319 yards and one touchdown.

    Saturday, Nov. 21 at 12 p.m. (CST) on CBS College Sports
    Despite a tough loss to Central Florida last Saturday, Keenum leads the nation in passing with a total of 4,194 yards. The junior signal caller has completed 358 of 514 attempts for 31 touchdowns heading into Saturday’s game against the Tigers. 
  • Dan LeFevour: Central Michigan at Ball State
    Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. (CST) on ESPN 2/ESPN360.com
    LeFevour continues to direct the Chippewas offense with 2,756 all-purpose yards and 31 touchdowns for the season after a convincing win over Toledo last Wednesday. The senior quarterback takes his team on the road as they take on Ball State tonight.

    Moore helped keep the Broncos undefeated season alive with a 63-25 victory over Idaho last Saturday. Moore, who threw for 299 yards and five touchdowns, continues to lead the nation in passing efficiency with a quarterback rating of 172.49.

  • Zac Robinson: No. 12 Oklahoma State vs. Colorado
    Thursday, Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. (CST) on ESPN/ESPN360.com
    Robinson led the Cowboys past Big 12 South rival Texas Tech, 24-17, and moved up seven spots in the BCS rankings. To date, Robinson has thrown for 1,922 yards and 15 touchdowns. The 2008 O’Brien Semifinalist has also rushed for 302 yards and four scores leading into Thursday’s match-up.
  • Ricky Stanzi (out for injury): No. 13 Iowa vs. Minnesota

    In ten games this season, Stanzi passed for 2,186 yards and 15 touchdowns. The senior quarterback showed his moxie, leading his team to five come-from-behind victories. Stanzi is out for the remainder of the regular season after undergoing ankle surgery.

  • Tim Tebow: No. 1 Florida vs. Florida International
    Saturday, Nov. 21 at 11:30 a.m. (CST) on ESPN360.com
    In the Gators’ 24-14 win at South Carolina, Tebow passed for 199 yards and one touchdown. The senior signal caller has thrown for 1,730 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 604 yards and 10 touchdowns going into Saturday’s game against the Golden Panthers.

The O’Brien completes On-the-Road Fan Vote Campaign in Week 12 Comments Off

The O’Brien will visit the remaining two Semifinalists’ campuses this Saturday

FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 16, 2009) – On Saturday, Nov. 21, the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award® (The O’Brien) will make its final two stops of the On-the-Road Campaign visiting the campuses of Semifinalists Colt McCoy and Jacory Harris. This will conclude the 2009 On-the-Road Campaign in which The O’Brien will have visited each of the 15 Semifinalists’ campuses to promote each quarterback’s campaign for the 2009 O’Brien Award. College football enthusiasts and fans alike are encouraged to stop by The O’Brien display and vote for their favorite Semifinalist. Fans who vote at The O’Brien display will automatically be entered into the “Defend Your Pride. Vote O’Brien Sweepstakes,” for a chance to win a trip for two to the 2010 O’Brien Awards Dinner at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The O’Brien displays will be open pre-game through kickoff.

This Saturday, Clausen will lead the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-3) to Heinz Field where they are set to collide with the No. 12 ranked Pittsburgh Panthers (8-1) with Stull at the helm. In the Fighting Irish’s loss to Navy last Saturday, Clausen threw for a career high 452 yards on 37 of 51 attempts. The junior quarterback is third in the nation in passing efficiency with 2,770 yards and a quarterback rating of 162.9.

Stull completed 16 of 23 passes for 225 yards and one touchdown in the Panthers’ 37-10 victory over Syracuse last Saturday. The senior signal caller is fifth in the nation with a quarterback rating of 161.6 and has thrown for 1,879 and 17 touchdowns this season.

    Saturday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. (CST) on Big 10 Network
    In last Saturday’s 24-7 loss to Ohio State, the senior quarterback ran for Penn State’s only touchdown and threw for 125 yards on 12 of 28 attempts. Clark and the Nittany Lions are at home again this Saturday as they prepare to take on Indiana. 
  • Jacory Harris: No. 14 Miami (FL) at North Carolina 
    Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2:30 p.m. (CST) on ABC
    Harris led the Hurricanes to a 52-17 victory over Virginia last week where Harris threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns. The win moved the Hurricanes up three spots in the BCS rankings.
  • Case Keenum: No. 15 Houston at Central Florida
    Saturday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. (CST)
    Keenum threw for 522 yards and three touchdowns in the Cougars’ 46-45 win against Tulsa last Saturday. This marks the second consecutive week that the junior quarterback has thrown for more than 500 yards. Keenum leads the nation with 3,815 passing yards.
  • Dan LeFevour: Central Michigan vs. Toledo  
    Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. (CST) on ESPN 2/ ESPN360.com
    Coming off a bye week, Central Michigan will square off against Mid-America West rival, Toledo, tonight at home with LeFevour at the helm. LeFevour has thrown for 1,848 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 548 yards and nine touchdowns this season.  
  • Jake Locker: Washington at No. 23 Oregon State     
    Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2:30 p.m. (CST) on FSN Northwest
    The junior signal caller threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns during last weekend’s 24-23 loss at UCLA. Locker hopes to break the Huskies’ three game losing streak as they take on Oregon State this weekend.
  • Colt McCoy:  No. 3 Texas at Baylor
    Saturday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. (CST) on FSN
    In last Saturday’s 35-3 win against Central Florida, McCoy threw for a career high 470 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jordan Shipley, keeping Texas’ undefeated season intact.
  • Kellen Moore:  No. 6 Boise State vs. Idaho
    Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2:30 p.m. (CST) on ESPNU
    As the nation’s top rated quarterback with a rating of 169.35, the sophomore signal caller led the Broncos (9-0) past Louisiana Tech, 45-35, last week. Moore threw for 354 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Tony Pike:  No. 5 Cincinnati vs. No. 25 West Virginia
    Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. (CST) on ESPN 2/ESPN360.com
    After sitting out the last three weeks due to injury, Pike hopes to see the field this Friday when the Bearcats host West Virginia. In just six games this season, Pike has thrown for 1,633 yards and 15 touchdowns.
  • Todd Reesing: Kansas vs. Nebraska
    Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2:30 p.m. (CST) on ABC
    The Jayhawks fell to Kansas State, 17-10, last Saturday where Reesing completed 27 of 41 passes for 241 yards and one touchdown. This season Reesing has thrown for 2,626 yards and 17 touchdowns. 
  • Zac Robinson: No. 19 Oklahoma State vs. Texas Tech
    Saturday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. (CST) on ABC
    Robinson led the Cowboys to a 34-8 victory over Iowa State last weekend. The senior signal caller completed 19 of 24 passes for 142 yards and one touchdown. Robinson hopes to improve his numbers as the Cowboys take on Big 12 South rival Texas Tech this weekend. 
  • Ricky Stanzi (out for injury): No. 10 Iowa at No. 11 Ohio State

    Stanzi is out for the rest of the regular season after undergoing surgery for an ankle injury suffered during last weekend’s loss to Northwestern. This season Stanzi has thrown for 2,186 yards and 15 touchdowns.

    Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2:30 p.m. (CST) on CBS

O’Brien Semifinalists Match-ups in Week Ten Comments Off

FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 4, 2009) – The 2009 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award® (The O’Brien) Semifinalist Match-ups for week ten highlight 14 O’Brien Semifinalists who will hit the gridiron this weekend as they vie for The O’Brien. Fans can show their support for any of the 15 Semifinalists, by visiting www.VoteOBrien.org and voting as often as once daily. The Fan Vote will count as 5% of the total vote in determining the Finalists.

Semifinalist Games (alphabetical by last name):

  • Matt Barkley: No. 12 USC at Arizona State
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. (CST) on ABC
    In the Trojans’ 47-20 loss at Oregon last Saturday, Barkley threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns. This season, the freshman has thrown for 1,727 yards and nine touchdowns. 
  • Daryll Clark: No. 11 Penn State vs. No. 16 Ohio State
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m. (CST) on ABC
    Penn State moved up one spot in the BCS rankings after their win over Northwestern last Saturday where Clark completed 22 of 31 passes and threw for 266 yards and a touchdown.
  • Jimmy Clausen: No. 22 Notre Dame vs. Navy          
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 1:30 p.m. (CST) on NBC
    Senior signal-caller Clausen completed 22 of 27 passes and threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s win over Washington State in San Antonio.  Clausen is currently the nation’s second ranked passer with a quarterback rating of 164.2.
  • Jacory Harris: No. 17 Miami vs. Virginia       
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. (CST)
    In the Hurricane’s 28-27 win at Wake Forest, Harris threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns. The sophomore quarterback connected with wide receiver Travis Benjamin for the game winning 13-yard touchdown pass with a 1:08 left on the clock. 
  • Case Keenum: No. 15 Houston at Tulsa
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. (CST) on CBS College Sports Network
    Last Saturday, Keenum threw for a career-high 559 yards and five touchdowns. Keenum found wide receiver Patrick Edwards in the end zone with less than a minute remaining, leading the Cougars to a 50-43 victory over Southern Mississippi. 
  • Dan LeFevour: Central Michigan (Bye Week)
  • Jake Locker: Washington at UCLA
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m. (CST)
    Coming off a bye week, Locker will lead the Huskies to the Rose Bowl to take on UCLA this Saturday. This season Locker has thrown for 1,968 yards and 12 touchdowns. The junior quarterback has also rushed for 207 yards and four additional touchdowns. 
  • Colt McCoy: No. 2 Texas vs. Central Florida
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. (CST) on FSN
    The 2008 O’Brien Finalist threw his 100th career touchdown pass in last week’s 41-14 win over Oklahoma State. McCoy completed 16 of 21 passes and threw for 171 yards and a touchdown. 
  • Kellen Moore: No. 7 Boise State at Louisiana Tech
    Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. (CST) on ESPN 2/ESPN 360.com
    In the last Saturday’s win over San Jose State, Moore kept the Broncos undefeated season alive when he passed for 278 yards and three touchdowns. The sophomore quarterback continues to lead the nation with a quarterback rating of 171.0.
  • Tony Pike: No. 5 Cincinnati vs. Connecticut
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. (CST) on ABC
    After two weeks of uncertainty, Pike hopes to return to the field in this week’s match-up against Connecticut. This season Pike has thrown for 1,633 yards and 15 touchdowns.  
  • Todd Reesing: Kansas at Kansas State
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 11:30 a.m. (CST) on Versus
    In the Jayhawks’ loss to Texas Tech, Reesing completed 20 of 35 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown. Reesing hopes to lead the Jayhawks to victory over Big 12 North rival Kansas State. 
  • Zac Robinson: No. 19 Oklahoma State at Iowa State
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m. (CST) on ABC
    In last Saturday’s loss to Texas, Robinson threw for 143 yards and one touchdown. This season, the return O’Brien Semifinalist has thrown for 1,690 yards and 13 touchdowns.
  • Ricky Stanzi: No. 4 Iowa vs. Northwestern
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. (CST) on ESPN/ESPN360.com
    Despite Stanzi’s five interceptions in Iowa’s win against Indiana, Stanzi passed for 337 yards and two touchdowns. The Hawkeyes’ undefeated season will be put on the line this weekend against Northwestern. 
  • Bill Stull: No. 13 Pittsburgh vs. Syracuse
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. (CST) on ESPNU
    After last week’s bye, the Panthers will square off against Syracuse this weekend at home. Stull is the nation’s third rated passer with a quarterback rating of 161.1. The Big East quarterback has thrown for 1,654 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.
  • Tim Tebow: No. 1 Florida vs. Vanderbilt
    Saturday, Nov. 7 at 6:15 p.m. (CST) on ESPN2/ESPN360.com
    In the Gators’ victory over Georgia, Tebow broke the Southeastern Conference record when he scored his 50th rushing touchdown. The senior-signal caller completed 15 of 21 passes for two touchdowns and ran for two more scores helping Florida secure the SEC East.

The O’Brien On-the-Road Campaign continues in Week Ten Comments Off

The O’Brien heads to four Semifinalists’ campuses this Saturday

FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 2, 2009) – The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award® (The O’Brien) continues its On-the-Road Campaign as it stops at four more Semifinalists’ campuses Saturday, Nov. 7. College football enthusiasts and fans alike are encouraged to stop by The O’Brien display and vote for their favorite Semifinalist. Fans who vote at The O’Brien display will automatically be entered into the “Defend Your Pride. Vote O’Brien Sweepstakes,” for a chance to win a trip for two to the 2010 O’Brien Awards Dinner at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas. The O’Brien displays will be open pre-game through kickoff. 

Fans not able to cast a vote in person can register and vote at www.VoteOBrien.org. Online fan voting will close at noon CST on Nov. 22 and Finalists will be announced on Nov. 23. Finalists will be selected by The O’Brien Selection Committee, comprised of journalists, broadcasters, commentators and former winners, with the Fan Vote accounting for 5 % of the total vote.
